While snacking on melon seeds may seem harmless, engaging in this behavior frequently over the long term can indeed lead to serious damage to the teeth. The hard shell of the seeds, coupled with the small contact area when chewing, exerts significant pressure on the incisal edges of the teeth. Continuously exerting force to crack open seeds not only risks wearing down the teeth but may also result in irregular "pits" or cracks.
If not protected over time, these damages can worsen, potentially resulting in tooth fractures. The common outcome is "melon seed teeth", marked by visible pits on the teeth, affecting both aesthetics and function.
Melon seeds with a strange taste are often the result of prolonged storage or improper storage conditions, leading to mold and spoilage. Moldy seeds can contain carcinogenic aflatoxins, with both long-term and excessive exposure increasing the risk of cancer. carcinogenic /ˌkɑːrsɪnəˈdʒenɪk/:致癌的
Aflatoxins are typically deactivated through high-temperature processes and are not easily broken down by regular cooking temperatures. Therefore, even when consuming fried melon seeds, if there is a moldy or bitter taste, it is advisable to promptly spit them out and rinse your mouth.
It is recommended to consume 50-70 grams of nuts per week, which averages to about 10 grams per day, equivalent to 1.5-2 handfuls of in-shell melon seeds.
There are various flavors of melon seeds such as milky, five-spice, caramel, and sea salt. However, it is not recommended to consume these flavored seeds. In cases where some are moldy or have a strange taste, the unique flavors can mask the issue, making it difficult to detect, leading to potential health risks. Additionally, these types of seeds are generally high in sugar and salt, which are not heart-friendly.
