Armstrong Cottage, nestled in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, is a meticulously crafted off - grid and net - zero family retreat by Peter Braithwaite Studio. It not only holds the wonderful childhood memories of the owners but also showcases a unique charm of deep integration with nature, as well as a focus on environmental protection and functionality in its interior and exterior decoration and design.

Looking at the exterior of the cottage, its architectural form is extremely distinctive. It consists of two pavilions, one for sleeping and the other for living. These pavilions are ingeniously erected on stilts in the naturally formed clearings on the island, seemingly floating gracefully among the tree canopies. This design allows the building to interact closely with the natural environment. The natural landscape can extend unhindered beneath the building, making the cottage an integral part of nature rather than an obtrusive presence.

从室外看,小屋的建筑形态极为独特。它由两座分别用作睡眠和起居的亭子组成,这些亭子被巧妙地架设在岛上自然形成的空地上的高跷之上,仿佛轻盈地悬浮在树冠之间。这种设计让建筑与自然环境亲密互动,自然景观可以毫无阻碍地在建筑下方延伸,使小屋成为自然的一部分,而非突兀的存在。



In terms of the building structure, the cottage incorporates a series of innovative designs that ensure both stability and environmental friendliness. By fastening steel wide - flange columns to the native bedrock below, the elevation of the building is achieved. This approach significantly reduces the amount of concrete used, avoiding potential pollution to the fertile topsoil on the island caused by concrete. The rest of the building's superstructure is designed in the form of a 'kit of parts'. Structural components such as wooden beams, steel beams, lam beam rigid frames, wood - steel hip members, and wooden rafters are selected. These components can not only give full play to their inherent structural properties but also are convenient to be transported to the site by barge and easily assembled on - site using steel plates and bolts.

The exterior decoration of the cottage is simple and rustic, complementing the surrounding natural environment perfectly. The choice of building materials focuses on the integration with nature. Wood and steel are widely used. The natural textures of these materials echo the surrounding trees and rocks, presenting an unadorned primitive beauty. In terms of color, the overall color scheme leans towards natural colors, mainly featuring the warm tones of wood and the cool gray of steel. It is low - key and unpretentious, blending seamlessly with the background of the forest and the lake.

小屋的外观装饰风格简洁而质朴,与周边自然环境相得益彰。建筑材料的选择注重与自然的融合,多采用木材和钢材,这些材料的自然质感与周围的树木、岩石相互呼应,展现出一种未经雕琢的原始美感。在色彩上,整体色调偏向自然色系,以木材本身的暖色调和钢材的冷灰色为主,低调而不张扬,与森林和湖水的背景完美融合。

The living space is spacious and bright. Large - area windows bring the beautiful outdoor scenery into the room, allowing residents to have an intimate connection with nature wherever they are. The decorative elements indoors also mainly use natural materials. The wooden floors, ceilings, and furniture bring a warm and comfortable touch, creating a cozy living atmosphere.

Their materials and colors are coordinated with the overall space, further strengthening the natural style. For example, the sofas and coffee tables placed in the living room are made of natural fabric materials and wooden frames, which are both comfortable and environmentally friendly. In the handling of details, many decorative items that reflect natural elements are integrated into the interior decoration, such as ornaments in the shape of tree branches and stones, or paintings depicting natural landscapes. These small details add an artistic atmosphere to the space and deepen the connection between people and nature.

The shapes of the lamps are also simple and elegant, mostly made of wood or metal, consistent with the overall style.
