本周我们来学习与运气相关的词汇

1. fortune /'fɔːtʃuːn/

n. 运气;机遇

搭配:good / bad/ ill fortune 好/坏运气

fortune smiles on sb 好运眷顾某人

a stroke of fortune 一丝好运

have the good fortune to do sth

e.g. By a stroke of fortune, he found his lost wallet.

e.g. His success was mainly due to good fortune.

e.g. Fortune smiles on those who work hard and never give up.

antonym: misfortune 不幸;灾祸

be plagued by misfortune 饱受厄运折磨

e.g. She felt as if she were plagued by misfortune, as everything she tried seemed to fail.

2. curse /kɜːs/

n. 祸根;祸端

搭配:a curse or a blessing 某件事情既可能是好事,也可能是坏事

e.g. Noise is the curse of modern city life.

e.g. Technology is a curse or a blessing; while it makes life easier, it also raises privacy concerns.

e.g. Fame is a curse or a blessing—not everyone can handle the pressure that comes with it.

3. jackpot /'dʒækpɒt/

n. (碰运气游戏中的)大笔奖金,高额奖金

e.g. The lottery jackpot is up to one million dollars.

e.g. The casino offered a jackpot of $10 million.

补充:casino 赌场

搭配:hit /strike the jackpot 获得头等奖,也可比喻为获得意外成功

e.g. The company struck the jackpot with their new product.

e.g. She really hit the jackpot when she found her dream job.

4. auspicious /ɔː'spɪʃəs/

adj. 吉祥的;吉利的

搭配:an auspicious day/date 吉日

an auspicious start/ beginning 好的开始

e.g. They won their first match of the season 5–1 which was an auspicious beginning.

e.g. They picked an auspicious date for their opening ceremony.

e.g. Fish should always be the last dish on the menu, and it is particularly auspicious to have a little left over at the end.

antonym: ominous /'ɒmɪnəs/ 不祥的;不吉利的

e.g. The broken mirror was an ominous warning that something was wrong.

e.g. The ominous silence in the room made everyone feel uneasy.
